From what I have read the video card makes a big difference.
The 17 inch MacbookPro has a 256MB video card vs the 128mb card in the 15 inch MacbookPro 1.83ghz.

I use Aperture with a first-generation (spring 2006) 17 inch MacBook Pro with a 2.16 GH Intel Core Duo and a 5400rpm 120Gig hard disk. At first I was running it with only 1 Gig of RAM and it was super slow. I added a second gig of ram and it now works great. Switching to full screen view for adjustments with the HUD, etc., take almost no time. Importing RAW images from a full 2Gig SD card shot with a Nikon D80 (10MP) runs now far more quicker than before when the machine had only 1 Gig, especially if I'm using a SanDisk Ultra II card, as opposed to a regular speed card. My next investment is upgrading the hard drive to a 250 Gig 7200rpm.

I hope this helps.
